Counseling Program at RMS

Students are supported by the Richards Middle School team of school counselors who work together to encourage academic, career and personal/social development. 

 *The following information is taken from the American School Counselor Association (ASCA), National Standards for Students, Competencies and Indicators

Academic Development support to assist students with the following areas:

  • Developing "...the attitudes, knowledge and skills that contribute to effective learning in school and across the life span" (p. 5).
  • Completing "...school with the academic preparation essential to choose from a wide range of substantial post-secondary options, including college" (p. 6).
  • Understanding "...the relationship of academics to the world of work and to life at home and in the community" (p. 6).                

Career Development support to assist students with the following areas:

  • Developing "...the skills to investigate the world of work in relation to knowledge of self and to make informed career decisions" (p. 7).
  • Employing "...strategies to achieve future career goals with success and satisfaction" (p. 8).
  • Understanding "...the relationship between personal qualities, education, training and the world of work" (p. 8).

Personal/Social Development support to assist students with the following areas:

  • Acquiring "...the knowledge, attitudes and interpersonal skills to help them understand and respect self and others" (p. 9).
  • Making decisions, setting goals, and taking necessary action to achieve goals.
  • Understanding "...safety and survival skills" (p. 10).
